The Animated Series' Creator Unveils Rosie and Alastor's Backstory Is a Major Teaser for Season Three
Devoted fans of the series at last received a long-awaited backstory in the second season's episode 4, titled “It's a Deal.” This episode will probably spark a lot of discussion and pose numerous inquiries about the essence of one particular demon Overlord who seems far more powerful than anyone previously understood. The new revelations feature a look into the human life of a fan-favorite character prior to his demise and sentence to the underworld.
A Major Tease for Upcoming Installments
The show's creator disclosed a secret about “It's a Deal” – it serves as a huge hint for the third season. Additionally, she offered further details into the methodology of designing the mortal forms of her demonic cartoon figures.
Spoiler alert for the fourth episode of Hazbin Hotel, season 2.
In the episode, a flashback discloses that fan-favorite character Alastor, the Radio Demon was a serial killer in his mortal days. Being aware he was destined for Hell, he established communication with the realm beyond beforehand to obtain a strong position in Hell. Rosie, the charismatic leader Hell’s cannibal community, vowed Alastor he would become “the most powerful Condemned Soul in Hell” in exchange for his soul.
This raises the question: In what way is this character powerful enough to elevate Alastor above every other Demonic Sinners?
“The agreement between Rosie and Alastor is the first stepping stone in a much bigger story that encompasses so much, moving into season 3,” the creator explains. “Obviously that is a perfect question: How is she so strong? The solution might be various factors, but the revelation is in season 3. I am thrilled for people to witness it.”
It is uncertain the duration viewers will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s next season. The production companies have approved the third and fourth seasons, but the creator often remarks that animated production is a slow, lengthy process, and later seasons are undated. Nevertheless, she says withholding on specific information is an important part of keeping the second season's focus in the right places.
“The challenge of any agreement with infernal beings, or narratives that have mysteries, is providing people sufficient clues to be like, Something's up here, and then revealing that gradually, and allowing that be gratifying,” she says. “So I am quite eager.”
Mysteries Resolved in The Next Season
The showrunner promises that season 3 will tackle the queries fans have been asking, such as why Rosie ordered Alastor to disappear for a seven-year period, which weakened his power in the infernal realm.
“The whole seven years, and the pacts these individuals are doing, and all that — it's feeding into a bigger narrative,” she says.
Meanwhile, the Rosie/Alastor backstory episode offers another glimpse into what the main characters of Demonic Sinners looked like as mortals, following after seeing Sir Pentious’ historical human form in episode 2. She explains that a lot of thought was put into the visual creation of these forms.
“The human versions of these personas carry so much weight,” she says. “They range from looking quite distinct from their demon form to looking very similar. With the first character, the initial design we see, there was a little bit of a debate internally between choosing a design that symbolizes the character, as opposed to going with something that's very time-period accurate. We leaned toward creating something that just seemed like it was him.”
She mentions the biggest debate over Pentious’ human design was his lengthy locks: “We were like, ‘No one really had long hair of that style in that historical period.’ But at the same time, we think the silhouette is extremely crucial, and we also just felt he looked good. We were like, ‘This seems correct.’ We sort of gave the excuse that he's a hermit, so he just let his hair grow out. So there is always a solution. As we design the mortal forms of these personas […] it's such a fun thing to investigate and determine. I am looking forward for people to see more of the appearances of the human versions.”
New episodes of Hazbin Hotel season 2 are released on Wednesdays on Prime Video.
