Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
